Newsletter 2019 - 2020
Welcome to the
2019 – 2020 BARTA Season
Welcome back to another enriching year with the Bartholomew County Retired Teachers. One of the main benefits of belonging to BARTA and attending the meetings is the opportunity to connect and re-establish relationships with fellow retired teachers. It’s a good time to renew friendships and meet other fellow retirees for a relaxing and entertaining luncheon four times a year. We offer you the chance to learn new things from the fellowship, and also increase your knowledge of the community by listening to our engaging speakers at each meeting. Or you can come and just be entertained and relax.
We look forward to seeing you at the meetings. Cost of the luncheons will be $10.00.
Meeting Communications
Invitations to our quarterly meetings will be delivered primarily by e-mail. Please watch your email about two weeks ahead of meeting dates for your personal invitation. Then respond promptly to the invitation. If you confirm that you are coming and aren’t able to attend, please let us know as soon as possible or you will be charged for the meal.

BARTA Dues
BARTA dues this year are $10.00. We use the money for supplies, web-site development, mailings, end of year memorials to IRTA and grants to active teachers. Along with your dues information, you will find included on the post card, the opportunity to make a separate contribution to the BARTA Grant Fund. This money goes to active teachers who apply for the grant. As mentioned previously, our communication for the meetings mainly are handled by email. If you prefer to receive a phone call inviting you to our meetings, you can note that on the membership card as well. Please return your membership card and dues payment today.
BARTA’s Teacher Grant Program
Four years ago the BARTA Executive Board voted to initiate a grant program that would benefit local teacher in their classrooms. With the help of Janice Montgomery, we joined BCSC Foundation last year to administer the grant more effectively. However, with your increased contributions, BARTA can be more of a force to help teachers realize their dreams of initiating programs that will help students excel in the classroom. The additional donations that you make when sending your membership dues are necessary to make this program successful. Last year members donated $1,056. An additional $970 was donated from BARTA’s treasury. Can it be more? Only you can determine this. Please consider a gift to today’s teachers by donating to BARTA’s Grant Program when sending your membership dues. Teachers that were recipients of last year’s grants will be at our September luncheon to share how their grants are benefitting children in their classrooms. Thank you for considering a contribution to today’s teachers.

Who to call:
BARTA Membership Extends Far Outside Columbus
Our loyal BARTA members live in five states, California, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, and 18 Indiana cities and towns. We appreciate your loyalty, even though some of you are far away. We always hope to see you at one of our luncheons, so don't forget us when you are in town. There is always room for one or two more.
BARTA Honors and Awards
At every BARTA meeting, we collect money for the Pennies from Heaven Fund. This money is used to help support local organizations that service children. Last year we collected $491.78. The Community Service Committee used this money and presented grants to Foster Children Ministries, Hope Community Center (Youth Education), and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. We also sent a contribution to IRTA in memory of Bartholomew County teachers who passed away during the year.
Several awards were presented to BARTA and BARTA members this past June at the Indiana Retired Teachers Convention. Cheryl Zuckschwert-Ellsbury was recognized as our area’s outstanding volunteer for her outstanding volunteer efforts to the community. We also received an award for our press release and website.
The Community Service Committee awarded 11 certificates to members who volunteered more than 500 hours to children and the community. As a grand total, BARTA members reported 32,397 volunteer hours during 2018. IRTA uses $24.69 per hour as a guide for the value of retiree volunteer service. So this would be an equivalent of $799,881.93 BARTA members contributed to the community. The Community Service Committee also arranged volunteer sign up for Love Chapel as part of the Holiday Food program in November.
3rd Grade Dictionary Distribution
BARTA is a co-sponsor of the Dictionary Project. BARTA volunteers make short presentations to 3rd grade classrooms throughout Bartholomew County while presenting the dictionaries. IUPUC CTL organizes the books, places name plates in the dictionaries and distributes them to the schools. The project is supported through the Heritage Fund. If you are interested in volunteering contact Denise Goodin ([email protected]) or call Janice Montgomery at 812.390.9023.
A New Year
BARTA is one of the largest retired teacher organizations in the state. One of the reasons is because we have active committees that work with our retirees to keep them informed of teacher issues such as the State Legislature, volunteer opportunities in Bartholomew County and inform them of services available to retirees.
We need help in keeping BARTA healthy and strong. We need volunteers to help with the Legislative Committee. This committee keeps up to date on Legislative issues and communicates with our legislators to support legislation beneficial to teacher retirees. The additional stipend in September is a good example. We need volunteers to make sure the stipend continues and encourage the legislators to implement a COLA for retirees. A COLA is critical for our older retirees. We need help from you to get this passed in Indianapolis.
We also collect and archive information that is related to our retirees. The responsibility of the Historian is look through The Republic and collect articles related to retired teachers, as well as BARTA certificates and other information related to our meetings. The information is stored digitally.
We will have a volunteer sheet at your luncheon table in September asking for your help with committee work. Please consider giving a little bit of your time. The more people who volunteer means less work for everybody.
